Indie Film – A Rant!

Hey folks!

If you’re anything like me, a sucker for a good indie film, you’ve probably noticed how tough the journey can be for filmmakers, especially here in the UK. I’ve been around the block a few times, over 13 years in this crazy industry, from managing sets to directing my own shorts. And let me tell you, the leap from short films to feature-length is like jumping across a bloody canyon!

It’s no secret that the indie film scene is brimming with talent, but the support? That’s a whole different story. I’ve seen too many brilliant minds struggle to find the resources they need. We’re talking about a lack of financial support, distribution hurdles, and, dare I say, a somewhat lukewarm approach from the powers that be towards nurturing indie talent.

Take the tax breaks, for example. They’re like a golden ticket for indie filmmakers to bring their visions to life, yet we’re lagging behind. If we want to keep up, nay, outdo the competition, we need to step up our game. The UK has always been a powerhouse of creative talent, but without the right backing, we risk losing these bright sparks to other, more supportive industries or countries.

I’ve been part of several award-winning short films, features and HETV, and each time I’m reminded of the raw passion and potential in our indie film community. It’s high time we bridge the gap from shorts to features. We’re not just talking about financial investment here; it’s about creating an ecosystem that nurtures and respects indie filmmaking as a vital part of our cultural tapestry.

So, what’s the solution? More funding? Better distribution channels? A more robust support system? Yes, yes, and hell yes! It’s time for a change, folks. Let’s rally for a stronger, more vibrant indie film scene in the UK.
